Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ new film Blue Beetle has kicked Barbie out of the top spot at the domestic box office, Variety reports.
The superhero film opened with $25.4 million in the United States and Canada this weekend, which was enough to move past Barbie. After taking the world by storm, the Greta Gerwig-directed powerhouse grossed $21.5 million in its fifth week of release, bringing its domestic total to a whopping $567.3 million.
Blue Beetle tells the story of a college graduate whose life changes when he suddenly transforms into an alien superhero. The cast includes Bruna Marquezine, Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and George Lopez.
Despite mostly glowing reviews, the film was projected to make between $25 million to $32 million, marking yet another underwhlemingrelease for DC Studios.
Despite the week opening, Blue Beetle was much more warmly embraced by critics compared to the last two DC Studios box-office bombs, The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Blue Beetle scored a decent 76% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a B-plus grade from CinemaScore.
The rest of the top five at the domestic box office included Oppenheimer, which clocked in $10.6 million in its fifth week for a North American total of $285.2 million, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which earned $8.4 million in its third frame for a North American total of $88.1 million, and Strays which launched at $8.3 million.
