Sony Pictures’ racing film Gran Turismo landed at No. 1 at the box office, keeping Barbie from reclaiming the throne.
Gran Turismo had a $17.3 million opening weekend at the domestic box office as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a small amount for a video game movie but enough to take the No. 1 spot. Overseas, the film grabbed $36.5 million from 61 markets for an early global total of $53.8 million.
The movie’s entry at the box office comes after its original release was delayed two weeks due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which kept actors from doing press. In those two weeks, fans were treated to sneak peeks and screenings that helped build a buzz and earn a nice $3.9 million before its eventual release on Aug. 25.
That last-minute move kept Barbie out of the top spot, with the Greta Gerwig-directed film earning $17.1 million at the box office this weekend. These numbers can change as box office analysts have revealed the second annual National Cinema Day, which prices movie tickets at $4 a piece across various theaters in the country, will affect the box office.
