Tinashe Responds to Backlash Over North West Comment

Tinashe is coming under fire for her comments about North West.

On Monday, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s 6-year-old daughter performed at her father’s Yeezy Season 8 show during Paris Fashion Week. She rapped over the beat for “What I Do?” a song originally performed by 5-year-old viral sensation ZaZa. But fans were quick to call out Kim and Kanye for not giving the originator credit.

ZaZa’s family took to Instagram to address North’s performance. “We take PRIDE in creativity, and believe whether a child’s involved or an adult… creativity deserves RESPECT/homage!” they wrote. “What @kimkardashian (Kanye west) are doing with their daughter… with the inspiration of ZaZa & our family in mind is okay… we not mad BUT PLS SHOW LOVE AND SUPPORT TO THE ORIGINAL FIRST!!!”

in July of 2019, ZaZa & her dad went into the studio for the ultimate experience! To finally begin making the music she wanted to make. We take PRIDE in creativity, and believe whether a child’s involved or an adult… creativity deserves RESPECT/homage! What @kimkardashian (Kanye west) are doing with their daughter… with the inspiration of ZaZa & our family in mind is okay… we not mad BUT . . PLS SHOW LOVE AND SUPPORT TO THE ORIGINAL FIRST!!! We admire Kanye west, and adore his journey. However, we don’t wanna feel like our daughter’s journey in the world of entertainment is being STIFLED . . THANK YOU! 💕 . . #ZaZaChallenge #WhatIDo #ThatsANoNo #ZaZa #BlackGirlMagic #blackgirlsrock #HypeKids #hypebae #redcarpetgirlz #explorepage #viral #yeezyseason8 #kanyewest #kimkardashian

Kim responded in the comments, acknowledging ZaZa’s inspiration. “We love you, North is a huge fan and records in the studio all the time with her dad and is inspired by ZaZa and loves Lay Lay too!” she said. “Todays performance of North’s remix of ZaZa’s song was something she asked to do at the last minute and a complete surprise. I didn’t mean to not give credit where credit was due. Would love for the girls to meet soon.”

I’m so proud of my Northie!!!!!! Her 1st performance had me in tears! She had an impromptu performance on stage at her dads Yeezy Season 8 fashion show! Shout out to Zaza!!! @redcarpetZaZa North hopes you like the remix!!! pic.twitter.com/f9Zas0OLlz

Tinashe also decided to weigh in on North’s performance. “North west wishes,” she wrote in ZaZa’s comments. Her response received backlash from some fans. Justine Skye, who is a friend of the Kardashian-Jenner family, clapped back, writing, “you mad?”

The Songs for You singer also addressed the controversy on Twitter, saying she was only joking. “It was a fucking joke y’all seriously dragging it. Y’all really acting As if personally reached out to the little girl like she even on the gram like I’m fucking sick of everyone being so damn self righteous Plssssssssssss,” said Tinashe, adding, “I swear y’all just like to be mad about stuff. Yes it was a joke, lighten up.”

After the comment was reposted by The Shade Room, Tinashe laughed it off. “Lol anyways… did everyone vote today?!”

I swear y’all just like to be mad about stuff. Yes it was a joke, lighten up.
