André 3000 Releases New Instrumental EP ‘7 Piano Sketches’

If there is one rapper that refuses to be boxed in, it is probably André 3000. An Atlanta hip hop legend who is still around and kicking, casually winning the best rap titles in this day and age, has decided to do something very different this time.

It was not long ago that André 3000 dropped an album as a flautist. Now, he has taken things a notch higher with his latest EP, 7 Piano Sketches, where all seven tracks are piano instrumentals.

Each track begins with a voice announcing the track name and number — which is the only time you really get to hear André 3000’s voice on the record. Once the announcement is made, he jumps straight into the piano pieces that represents different states of mind.

Some are absolutely absurd, like the track titled ‘When you’re a ant and you wake up in an awesome mood, about to drive your son to school, only to discover that you left the lights on in the car last night so your battery is drained’ — which by the way, is indeed the complete title. Some are more sensual, like the song named ‘I spend all day waiting for the night.’ The nomenclature follows his recent inclination for whole sentences as track names, which was the same thing he did on his last album, New Blue Sun.

One thing seems clear though, André in recent years has been making music as someone having fun with different crafts, as opposed to pleasing the crowd. The result is eccentric expressions of art such as this EP. To promote the album, André also showed up to the MET Gala with a piano attachment on his back, which resembles his sketch on the cover art for the EP. Check out the EP below!
