Eminem marked a significant personal milestone on Monday, April 20, celebrating 18 years of sobriety. The 53-year-old hip-hop icon took to Instagram to share an image of his gold 18-year sobriety coin. The token features the inscription “to thine own self be true” across the top, alongside the words “unity, service and recovery” encircling a golden triangle with the number 18 etched in Roman numerals.
He captioned the post simply: “XVIII 🏆.”
For the occasion, the Detroit-bred rapper, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, wore a vintage T-shirt paying homage to D-Nice’s 1991 album To Tha Rescue, the second and final solo studio project from the former Boogie Down Productions member.
The milestone was met with an outpouring of support from fans and peers alike. Comedian and podcaster Theo Von commented, “Amen,” while Eminem’s half-brother, Nathan “Nate” Mathers, shared a message of support, writing, “proud of you big bro.” Questlove, the legendary Roots drummer and director, also chimed in with, “Awesome. Keep Goin 👏.”
Reflecting on the Journey
Eminem has been candid about his path to recovery. In a 2022 conversation with his longtime manager, Paul Rosenberg, the rapper reflected on his near-fatal overdose in 2007, noting that it “took a long time for my brain to start working again.” During the height of his addiction, Eminem revealed he was consuming 75 to 80 Valium tablets a night, a quantity he described as potentially lethal.
Rosenberg recalled his genuine concern at the time, specifically questioning whether the rapper would retain his ability to rap after his recovery. Fortunately, Eminem’s creative spirit proved resilient, leading to a sustained and prolific career.
A New Chapter
Beyond his personal health milestones, Eminem has recently embraced the joys of grandfatherhood. His eldest daughter, Alaina Scott, whom he adopted in the early 2000s, welcomed a baby girl named Scottie Marie Moeller on April 14. The name serves as a tribute to the child’s birth mother, Dawn Scott, the sister of Eminem’s ex-wife, Kim Scott. This follows the birth of a son to his biological daughter, Hailie Jade, last March.
