Welcome back to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger.
The sequel to the 1997 film, starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, is coming to Paramount+ this fall. According to Variety, the movie “follows Dexter Reed (Thompson) and original cashier Ed (Mitchell), as they reunite in the present day at fast-food restaurant Good Burger with a hilarious new group of employees.”
Back in 2016, Thompson recalled himself and Mitchell being just 15 years old when they were chosen to join the cast of the sketch comedy show All That, where Good Burger was born in sketch form.
“I think we just had very similar experiences in life, like he happened to be from Chicago and I’m from Atlanta, but most black families are pretty much the same, like very close and very fearful of our five-foot mothers and shit like that,” Thompson told Entertainment Weekly with a laugh. “We both have very similar taste in comedy even though his is more physical and mine is a little more standing around-ish.”
The two branched off All That and made their own show Kenan & Kel in 1996, with the release of Good Burger the following year.
The two eventually went their separate ways, but interest in a sequel never died down. Kel teased a possible reunion five years ago, telling BuzzFeed that a meeting was held and contractual matters were being hashed out.
Thompson revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight last year that Good Burger 2 was not only going to happen, but the script was nearly complete.
Mitchell and Thompson reprised their roles in the “Kenan & Kelly” sketch for Saturday Night Live, which was an idea brought forth by host Keke Palmer.
