OG Aunt Viv Janet Hubert Snaps As She Defends Will Smith For Slapping ‘Mean-Spirited’ Chris Rock

Actress Janet Hubert, who played Will Smith’s mother in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air for three seasons in the 1990s, has had her share of grievances with her fictional son and the rest of the Fresh Prince cast. But on Tuesday (March 29), she was firmly in Smith’s corner as chatter from the Oscars debacle continued to dominate the news cycle.

“So PROUD OF YOU!” Hubert wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post alongside a photo of Smith accepting his first Oscar. “Yes, there is only so much one can take…sometimes you have to slap back. Celebrate the win…nothing else matters. Both actions were incorrect but Chris didn’t need to go there. Met him once…. it was enough for me…. very mean spirited.

“I cannot tell you how many times I have wanted to slap the mess out of so many folks who have disrespected me. Will stood up for his wife, Chris Rock is always disrespecting Black women. Mean spirited hides behind comedy. BULL.”

In a follow-up video, Janet Hubert appeared to address some of the haters who commented on her post and proceeded to blast them for stepping out of bounds.

“Some of y’all need to stop coming for people on the Instagram page and on their Twitter page and whatever, talking that kind of smack you wanna talk, thinking we ain’t gonna smack back. Sometimes you get smacked back. And Will Smith is a grown ass man and I am an old ass grown woman. And he ain’t gonna tell me what to say. I ain’t kissin’ nobody’s ass, but I will kick it. So some y’all need to understand, sometimes you go too far.

“And just like Will said, we bleed, we hurt from some of the things you sayin’ and you think we supposed to take it. No, we are not. Now, there’ve been quite a few people that I’ve wanted to smack, but I didn’t because … if I probably coulda, I would if I coulda. Let’s see Wendy [Williams], Kevin Frazier, Michael Yo, Tamron Hall, quite a few. But I chose to do it verbally. So some of y’all need to stay in your lane and stop telling us what to do.”

She added in the caption, “Yesterday is just that …MOVE ON … be careful who you come for … I bite and I will not apologize.”

The Will Smith-Chris Rock slap heard around the world has been the talk of the internet since Sunday night (March 27) as the 94th Academy Awards took place. Smith has since issued an apology to the legendary comedian and admitted he was in the wrong.

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness. I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world.

“I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”
